Along the canal

My eyes have to get used to the surroundings

Everything is so different but still so familiar

The same sound of nature and

the same green growing.

The ducks quacking and chuckling

and I wonder if they see the world like I do

or do they prefer a much calmer lifestyle?

I see them dozing and napping

and stretching and yawning.

The sound of a biker shouting „Go“

brings me out of my daydreams and makes me realise

it is not only nature here

but also rows of brick houses with their white windows

all loved and lived in.

The red gates I see

complement the proud dragon

I notice on the waving flag of Wales

Walking down the canal you still hear

the echoes of the horses‘ hooves.

Under the bridge the echoes get louder

but one boat, calm and alone

is floating on the water

waiting for its owner.

Once you start walking

along the canal, step by step

you start seeing small things

in the corner of your eye

maybe a duckling or a heron

or a ball that got lost.

You feel overwhelmed by all these impressions

Maybe it‘s time to sit down

and observe what is closest to you.

Peaceful and calm before me

The water slowly flowing, almost standing

I‘m taking pictures of everything I see.

The ducks – many ducks – with their little ducklings

Swimming in the water, walking over the lilly pads

Flowers – blooming – in every colour and shape

There is white, purple, yellow and pink

The houses on the side

A cat lying on the warm roof

On the path – people walking and talking

Cycling on their bikes or walking their dogs

It seems like nothing can unsettle this.

The cars on the other side of the hill

are chasing each other along the road.

In every car there are people with

different stories

different lives.

For some people, finding a job

is as hard as it is for a duckling

to follow his mother

through the overgrown water.

Some people are chasing their dreams

like the squirrels chase each other

around in the trees

but never catch the other.

Sometimes life isn‘t about

reaching, approving or chasing

It‘s about living.

by Lyssa Brönnimann

The yellow flowers

Sticking out their heads

As if to catch a breath

Decorating the canals

Curious ducks

Black, red, brown and blue

The sky above

A blue-gray mess of clouds

A place to refresh, to rejoice

A place to stay – before, during, after

by Marla Zwahlen

All birds worship my Lord.

Beautiful harmonies from every angle.

singing the name of the most high.

Look at them.

they do not sow

or store away in barns.

But my father provides them with

everything they need

and more.

by Kira In-Albon

Birds flying high

Fish swimming deep

Although the road seems quiet

squirrels, butterflies and ducks

are here

The reflection of the trees in the water

is as clear as my decision

not to swimming here

by Carlotta Strozzi

I look at all these people walking by

biking, strolling, chatting, with dogs at their sides.

Sitting protected under my mother‘s wing

I hear the noise behind the trees and wonder

whats out there that I have not seen.

Maby one day I‘ll find out,

but for now I‘m staying here.

by Elina von Niederhäusern

The trembling duckling

Helplessly here I am

behind this dirty can

It takes my view

where is she

where is my mother?

She tried to save me

not like my father

My begging shouted all over the water

I will wait for her answer

the time no matter

I will scream and cry next to my brother

My brother‘s eye stares at me

hopelessly, sadly, ridiculously

We lose each other as he turns

to leave me behind

Now I am alone in the dirt

betrayed by everyone

I used to love

My heart hurts

so much.

by Mia Gander

What a lovely day!

So quiet and yet so loud

the birds are singing, the trees are rustling

in the soft wind.

The ducklings squeak to find their mum.

The bumblebee buzzes

sum sum sum

High up in a tree there is a mama squirrel.

She calmly eats some nuts

and drops the shells which plop

to the ground.

Next to her in another tree

there are the children

They play tag, lively and free

how cute is this to see?

so joyful so colerful

orange, yellow, blue, white, purple and pink

Smell better than

all the perfumes in the world.

Look better than the best paintings that exist.

What a wonderful sight which I can see

flowers everywhere

Two dragons in the patterned sky

one is blue the other is red

one flies from flower to flower

the other waves in the wind.

one is the little dragonfly

the other is the dragon of Wales.

by Leony Haldimann

As I wander on and on, my strides long and steady,

I think about the other people who have followed this path already.

There may have been a child, young and free,

Rejoiced over every flower, insect and tree.

Waving at the tiny fluffy duckling on its morning swim

Or listening to the birds blissfully sing.

And when one listens closely, the laughter can still be heard

In the rustle of the leaves or the songs of a young bird.

There may have been a businessman, successful and fairly rich,

Rushing, looking straight ahead, not wanting to see the colourful kitsch.

In his hand a phone, someone yelling on the line,

And the old man is too focused, to even acknowledge the sunshine.

And when one looks closely, footprints can still be found,

Where the stressed man had forcefully stomped on the ground.

There may have been a lady, tears running over her face,

And even as she blinked them away, her mascara left a trace.

But the water lilies, the butterflies, the frogs

Helped her suppress and further sobs.

The beauty of it all made her want to see

That hope and happiness will return, never flee.

And when one listens closely, yet they can still hear her cries subside,

Proving that even in sad moments there’ll always be light.

Now, the three people, described all walked down the same road trail.

Their experiences though were different, without fail.

Perception can vary, focus can too,

What you found out, your attention to the positive aspect

Which part of the walk did you pay your attention to?
